With Wood Street and Newdigate having recently succumbed to similar losses to Capel, the scene was set for a competitive game in the glorious Sunday sunshine.
Newdigate won the toss and put Wood Street in to bat. Wood street clearly liked the look of the pitch and raced to 217 off the first over, having dispatched the first delivery to the boundary for four with a text book drive and taken full advantage from some fine leg boundaries off the pacey bowling of Leo Turner.
Up stepped Bryce (Newdigate's most economical bowler of the day), Kaz and Zac who collectively bowled tidily and slowed the run rate considerably, pressuring one batsman into hitting his own stumps for the first wicket.
This started a regular fall of wickets, instigated by Freddie who picked up three wickets in two overs, literally sending one set of bails to Wales with an unplayable quicker ball. The wickets kept coming courtesy of some very good fielding from the whole team and a great spell from Oscar Smith which included two wickets.
Kaz and Freddie took an extra over each in which Kaz took two more wickets (three in the match) and Freddie had two catches put down, meaning that James didn’t have to mount the match ball for a five fer.
In total Newdigate took an impressive 11 wickets and kept Wood Street to a score of 258, which was testament to a great collective fielding effort (possibly the best of the season) and some great keeping from Millie.
Newdigate’s reply was assured and steady and led by Leo and Zac. Leo’s shot selection was sublime and between them they built a score of 217 without losing a wicket. Bryce and Yusuf took up the mantle with some great shot play from Bryce and excellent running of extras between them both.
Frankie and Joe took the score up to 255 with some steady batting. Oscar and Millie came in to take the game away from Wood Street with some beautiful boundaries from Millie before Kaz and Freddie saw the game home amassing a total of 308 runs with five more boundaries, including some glorious shots to the cover boundaries from Kaz.
A comfortable Newdigate victory in the end but a game that was more memorable for a great team effort in the field from Newdigate and great spirit from both teams.
