Match Summary

There are close games… and then there’s this one.

On a golden summer evening at Newdigate, two well-matched U11 sides went toe-to-toe in a contest that ebbed and flowed right to the final over. Salfords batted first and produced a disciplined innings with minimal wickets lost, applying real pressure with the ball when it was their turn in the field. But Newdigate’s resilience — fuelled by standout batting from Isla Browning and a thunderous six from Noah Herman — just edged them across the line in a contest that could’ve swung either way.

⸻

First Innings: Salfords Batting

Salfords won the toss and chose to bat — and immediately set the tone with calm, composed partnerships.

Opening pairs built steadily, rotating strike and putting pressure on the field. The standout came from Aditya Doranahali, who timed the ball sweetly and finished on 12 off 15 balls. Enzo Penna, Jimmy Hoad, and Sam Finlay all chipped in with scores between 6 and 9, keeping the tempo high but risk low.

Crucially, Salfords only lost two wickets across their entire innings — a fantastic effort in pairs format, where every dismissal costs the team 5 runs. That meant just 10 runs were deducted, while the steady stream of runs and extras did the rest.

Newdigate’s bowlers showed flashes of control, but wides (32) and no-balls (14) — each worth 2 runs — piled up. Combined with 5 byes, the extras tally ballooned to 51, giving Salfords a powerful net total of 289.

Newdigate Bowling Highlights

Samuel Jones was outstanding: 2 overs, 8 runs, 1 wicket – showing great rhythm and control.
Isla Browning also took a wicket, keeping things tight in her 2-over spell.
Thomas Shields (2-0-6-0) and Jenson Tullet (2-0-7-0) bowled with patience and accuracy.
Georgina Hunter delivered a rare maiden over in a tidy 2-over spell.

Despite these positives, the extras tally made the task ahead even harder.

Second Innings: Newdigate Batting

Chasing 290 to win, Newdigate’s innings got off to a confident start. Isla Browning, fresh off a strong bowling spell, led from the front with a commanding 30 from 18 balls — full of excellent shot selection and running between the wickets.

Then came the fireworks. Noah Herman brought the crowd to life with a huge six that cleared the leg-side boundary — a rare and thrilling moment at U11 level. He finished on 22 from 17 balls and swung the match back in Newdigate’s favour.

However, Salfords weren’t going to hand over the game. Their bowlers fought back, claiming 3 wickets and slowing the run rate in the middle overs. The pressure was on as the final pair – including Thomas Shields – walked to the crease needing to bat smartly.

In a tense finish, Thomas held his nerve with 11 runs from 20 balls, showing maturity well beyond his years. With the field closing in and the margin tight, the final runs came through calm placement and clever running. When the last ball was faced, Newdigate had reached a net score of 292 – just enough for a dramatic 3-run victory.

Salfords Bowling Highlights

Aditya Doranahali was the most economical bowler on the pitch: 2 overs, just 6 runs conceded.
Enzo Penna and Deon Collard each took a wicket and bowled with great intent.
Jimmy Hoad (2-0-6-0), Teddy Brown (2-0-9-0), and Tom Walters (2-0-11-0) maintained excellent control.
Sam Finlay bowled at good pace and challenged the batters throughout.

However, 21 wides and 4 no-balls (adding 42 runs) allowed Newdigate to keep their total ticking along — and in such a close match, that proved decisive.

Reflections

This was cricket at its best: close, exciting, and full of character. Salfords were excellent throughout — they lost just two wickets, showed tight bowling, and were unlucky not to come away with a win. Newdigate, to their credit, responded with heart and belief. Isla Browning led from the front with bat and ball, Noah Herman’s six lit up the evening, and Thomas Shields finished the job under pressure.

As the season progresses, matches like this are a reminder that the margin between winning and learning is incredibly fine — and both teams came away with plenty of pride.
