On a warm early July afternoon at Newdigate Cricket Ground, the Sunday XI reached the halfway point of their Village Cricket League campaign with a tense, hard fought draw against Worplesdon & Burpham CC 3rd XI — a match defined by one extraordinary century and one equally heroic rearguard.
Worplesdon & Burpham won the toss and chose to bat, but Newdigate’s bowlers struck quickly. Two early wickets with the score at 21 put the visitors under pressure, forcing consolidation rather than acceleration.
A father son partnership — Jack Lenton and Christopher Lenton (12) — steadied the innings with a composed 50 run stand. The momentum briefly swung back Newdigate’s way when bowling changes brought rewards: Mohammad Ali and Aiden Jones tightened the screws, slowing the scoring and picking up key wickets.
But the day was about to become the Jack Lenton Show.
With wickets falling around him, Lenton played with freedom, authority, and remarkable stamina. He added another valuable 50 run partnership with Ejaj Jilani (22), but once Jilani departed, Lenton simply took over.
His innings — 131 not out from 117 balls — was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Boundaries flowed, strike rotation never faltered, and his ability to farm the strike kept the scoreboard moving even as partners came and went.
By the time Worplesdon & Burpham declared at 227/9 from 42 overs, Lenton had carried the innings almost single handedly, setting Newdigate a challenging target of 228 from 43 overs.

Mohammad Ali delivered a great bowling spell 39/3 off 10 overs. Ian Kehl, Safwan Ahmed, Shahariar Sami, Father Chris and Son Chris – all claimed a wicket.
The reply began with intent, but the innings quickly unravelled. Before the 17th over, Newdigate were 53 for 6, the top order unable to withstand consistent pressure.
With victory no longer realistic, the task shifted: bat out the overs and secure a draw.
A determined partnership between Elahi and Sami added 45 crucial runs across 10 overs, stabilising the innings and pushing the match into safer territory. Elahi’s dismissal — a frustrating run out — brought fresh pressure, but Aiden Jones (16) joined Sami and played with admirable patience until the 42nd over.
Through it all, Sami was the backbone.
His innings — 62 not out from 97 balls, featuring 10 boundaries and a six — was a model of grit, concentration, and game awareness. He absorbed pressure, punished loose deliveries, and ensured Newdigate never slipped into danger.
Newdigate closed on 164/8 from 43 overs, securing a well earned draw.
The result was a draw which is a decent outcome for Newdigate, while Worplesdon & Burpham CC will rue a missed opportunity in securing a win.
