All Round Jon Bell sinks Dorking CC on VCL encounter

Monjur Elahi26 May - 22:28

Subbiah, Bell and Jones shone while the others chipped in

In a closely contested Village Cricket League encounter, Newdigate’s Sunday XI emerged victorious with a determined 4-wicket win over Dorking CC’s VCL 1st XI at Pixham Lane.
After electing to bat first, Dorking found scoring difficult on a surface that offered assistance to the bowlers. Newdigate’s disciplined bowling attack applied pressure from the outset, regularly picking up wickets and preventing any significant partnerships from forming. Wicket-keeper batter James Whitmarsh (25) top scored at number 7, while Jack Homewood’s 15 patient 15 started to build some momentum for the Home team. Their partnership was broken by a brilliant one handed diving catch at deep second slip by Jon Bell as Jack Homewood’s resistance ended. Despite a few moments of resistance, Dorking managed just 107 runs before declaring with nine wickets down after 43 overs, a good-will gesture that was acknowledged.
The bowling unit of Newdigate shared the spoils, with several players contributing economical and probing spells that kept the Dorking batters on the back foot. Jon Bell (22/3 of 10 overs), Kaium Khan (26/3 off 10 overs) and Aiden Jones (14/3 off 6 overs) kept the wickets coming while the other bowlers applied pressure on the Dorking batters by bowling economic spells.
Chasing a modest target of 108, Newdigate openers started with big bangs, scoring 30 runs off 3 overs. Mr. Extra, Alroy Pereira (19) and David Callcut (11) gave the team a flying start. However, Dorking bowlers started to tighten the screw by using the un-even bounce from the pitch and Newdigate’s run scoring slowed down. Newdigate lost 5 wickets in between 37 to 71 runs. It was a ‘nothing can go wrong’ day for Jon Bell, who came out denying the Dorking bowlers to score his unbeaten 19 with 4 boundaries. Despite a few early setbacks and the loss of wickets at regular intervals, a composed middle-order performance helped the visitors over the line in the 35th over. Jagadeesh Subbiah (17 not out) played a gritty innings to ensure his side coast to safety. Mr Extra (30) made vital contributions to ensure the chase never spiraled out of control.
Dorking’s bowlers showed grit, managing to take six wickets and briefly threatening to turn the tide. Jamie Harris (19/4 off 10 overs) was the pick of the bowlers for Dorking, while Khatib Hashim (15/2 off 6 overs) bowled well to maintain pressure on Newdigate.
Final score:
Captain’s player of the match: Jon Bell for 3 wickets, unbelievable catch and not out 19
Dorking CC – 107/9 declared (43 overs)
Newdigate CC – 111/6 (34.4 overs)
Result: Newdigate CC won by 4 wickets
