Newdigate Smash Cranleigh by 137 Runs in Sunday XI Masterclass

Monjur Elahi

Sunday XI, 23 Sept, Mohammad Ali

Newdigate’s Sunday XI produced a dominant, high octane performance at the Newdigate Cricket Ground, overwhelming Cranleigh’s Villagers XI with a blend of explosive batting and disciplined, relentless bowling. After winning the toss on this 35 overs limited Friendly match and choosing to bat, Newdigate piled on 233 all out in 33.3 overs, then dismantled Cranleigh for 96, registering a thumping victory.
Newdigate’s innings began in the worst possible fashion: David Callcut bowled for 0 in the second ball of the match. But from that moment on, Newdigate unleashed a sustained assault that Cranleigh never recovered from.
Eliott Spiers counter punched immediately scoring 41 runs off 32 balls with 5 boundaries and 1 six, playing with crisp timing and intent. His 41 at a strike rate of 128 reset the tone after the early wicket and forced Cranleigh’s bowlers onto the defensive.
The Middle Order carried out with the momentum, inform of Shyju Nath Parassini — 18 (19 balls) who kept the tempo high; and Jack Bowley — 20 (41 balls) played the anchoring role, absorbing pressure during a tricky phase.
Redwan Ahmed’s 32 off 42 balls was a composed innings that stitched the middle overs together, ensuring Newdigate didn’t lose momentum.
Mohammad Ali’s 61 off 30 balls where he hit 9 fours and 2 sixes was Newdigate’s innings’ defining performance. Ali arrived with the score at 116–5 and immediately transformed the match. His strike rate of 203.33 tells the story: clean hitting, ruthless ball striking, and a complete dismantling of Cranleigh’s change bowlers. He turned a competitive total into a commanding one.
There were contributions from the lower Order batters too. Snell, Hashim, Jones and Antony all chipped in small but useful runs as Newdigate surged past 200.
Extras (40) played a huge factor. Cranleigh leaked wides (17) and no balls (7), gifting Newdigate an entire partnership’s worth of runs.
For Cranleigh’s Bowling, Thomas Hall shines amid the chaos, despite the carnage, he stood tall, bowling 7 overs, 4 for 22. Hall bowled with discipline, accuracy, and late movement. His four wickets included the opener, two middle order breakthroughs, and a lower order lbw — a superb spell in a losing cause. Webster (2–41) and Wheeler (1–50) chipped in, but Cranleigh’s attack was undone by inconsistency and extras.
Cranleigh’s Chase was not a great one as Newdigate Rip Through the Line up. The fading daylight and the overcast condition did not help either. Chasing 234, Cranleigh needed a miracle. They never came close. Aiden Jones returned from his injury with a splendid bowling spell, producing 3 wickets off his 7 overs, giving away only 7 runs. Ali came into the play enforcing a direct hit run-out. Peter Snell produced his performance of the year, 2 wickets off 4 overs giving away 20 runs. He was losing a part of his left boot in every run-up and had to be take off the bowling as he could not run up with barely any boot left ?
Ali did not quite finish with his batting and the run-out, had to come to the play with the ball claiming 2 wickets off his 2.5 overs giving away 8 runs.
Newdigate’s bowlers struck early, struck often, and never let go. Wickets fell in clusters, pressure mounted, and Cranleigh’s innings collapsed to 96 all out in 22.5 overs.
The scorecard tells the story: no major partnerships, no sustained resistance, and no answer to Newdigate’s accuracy.
