On Sunday 30th August, Newdigate Cricket Club’s Sunday teamed welcomed wandering team Flemish Giants to the Brocus for a 35 over friendly match. Newdigate’s stand-in captain, David Callcut won the toss and chose to bat first on a wet wicket following heavy rain the previous day.

Newdigate started well, the captain opening with Jagadeesh Subbiah, who played the opening bowlers with attacking but careful intent, putting on 71 before the loss of Callcut for 30. Subbiah continued before being caught behind for 41. The home side continued, with a few decent innings, most notably from Redwan Ahmed (31) and Dencil Anthony (28 not out).

Newdigate ended up with 169 for 8 from their 35 overs. The pick of the Giants’ bowlers was Ben Bauman with 5 wickets from his 4 overs for just 10 runs. Ned Weston, Seb Pienaar and Joe Throp ended up with a wicket each.

In response, the Giants lost Shannon Pienaar early for just 6 runs. Joe Throp (27), Hugo Nicholls (33) batted well to put up some resistance against the home team’s bowling attack but were frustrated by some good fielding, in particular by Matt Boshoff, who seemed like a magnet in the field and stopped everything. Only Brian Furness (16) and Jack Feakes (19) reached double figures for the visitors.

The Flemish Giants were eventually bowled out for 140, Newdigate’s Subbiah ending up with 3 wickets, Steve Edwards and Dencil Anthony got 2 wickets each.
