31 August 2025 – The Brocus, Newdigate Village
Newdigate CC Sunday XI hosted Flemish Giants CC in a 40-over clash that turned out to be the perfect advertisement for Sunday cricket. It had everything: rapid scoring, momentum swings, athletic fielding, 499 runs in total, and a finish that went right down to the very last ball.
While the clubhouse big screen showed The Hundred, it went largely unnoticed. The real drama was unfolding on the field, as spectators packed the Brocus pavilion to cheer every twist and turn of an enthralling contest.
A Nail-Biting Finale
Chasing 250, Newdigate needed 12 runs from the final two overs. Ian Kehl and Monjur Elahi collected six from the 39th over, leaving six to win off the last. Drama followed immediately: three balls, no runs, and a run-out.
Enter Aiden Jones. Off his very first delivery, he cut square for four, then coolly stole a single to level the scores. With one ball remaining and one run required, Monjur chipped the ball over short cover to seal victory — a finish that could only be described as a cliff-hanger.
Giants’ First Innings Power
Having won the toss, the Flemish Giants batted first and got off to a flyer. James Furness blazed 54 from just 30 balls (8 fours, 2 sixes), propelling the visitors to 86 after 10 overs despite the early loss of a wicket.
The middle order kept the scoreboard ticking: Emma Furness (12), Aayush Patel (16), Joe Throp (16), and Jack Feakes (15) added useful contributions, taking the total to 166/6 by the 30th over.
Late acceleration came courtesy of Nish Amin (31), Dhiren Ramabhai (38 off 24), and Oliver Furness (13 off 8), pushing the Giants to a competitive 249/8.
For Newdigate, Harry Grimley led the way with 3/53 from 7 overs. He was backed by Aiden Jones (1/44), Ian Kehl (1/24), and Tom Harper (0/24 from 6), who applied pressure in the middle overs. Monjur Elahi, Felix Prakash, and Dencil Antony each picked up a wicket.
The Chase
Newdigate’s reply began steadily. Opener Julian Jeffery played the anchor role (16 from 38), while Angus Harper attacked fluently before retiring on 50 from just 49 balls, striking nine boundaries.
Jagadeesh Subbiah (31 from 57) kept the innings moving but fell to a run-out with the score at 100/1 in the 19th over. Quick wickets briefly stalled momentum, but super-sub batter David Callcut injected life back into the chase with a sparkling 50 (retired not out 0ff 42 balls). With this, Callcut completed his 1016 runs in a season – Congrats DC!
Even after Callcut and Subbiah’s departures, Newdigate’s middle and lower order held firm. Captain Monjur Elahi struck 29 from 29 balls (4 fours), supported by a lively cameo from Dencil Antony (17 off 12, with a four and six).
The finishing touches were applied by Kehl (3 off 9) and Jones (5 off 2, including that crucial boundary), ensuring Newdigate edged home in unforgettable fashion.
