Mark De Vrij 82 not out Sunday XI

Merton CC Boars visited Newdigate on 11th May 2025, Sunday for to play a 40 overs Friendly match with Newdigate’s Sunday XI.
Fast outfield, unusually hard pitch for May, sunny with a gentle breeze – all prompted the visitors to bat first as they won the toss.
Merton had a good start as they sprinted off to score 40 runs off 4 overs. James Prebble (23) and Gurpreet Singh (19) set up the initial charge. Bowling change from one end was forced as Santhosh Vijayan (8/0 off 4 overs) made run scoring difficult while Aiden Jones (27/2 off 6 overs) bowled cleverly varying his pace. Merton lost a quick 3 wickets in between 40 to 50 runs and the scoring rate dipped below 3 at one point. Jamie Davidson (24) and Andrew Counihan (47) batted cautiously to bring the visitors back on track with a half century partnership. Regular bowling change kept yielding wickets for Newdigate. However, Shashitha Kularatna (46 not out) dictated the proceedings, with support from the tail-enders. Merton CC Boars played their full allocation of 40 overs to reach a challenging 206/9.
Aiden Jones was the pick of the bowlers for Newdigate, Jagadeesh took a wicket on his very economical spell. Shahariar Sami, Mohammad Ali, Monjur Elahi, Redwan Ahmed and David Callcut – each claimed a wicket. Jagadeesh hinted his talent with wicket keeping with two stumpings on his interim role. All 11 Newdigate players bowled.
Newdigate started with a measured response as David Callcut and Mark De Vrij opened the innings for the host. The opening pair salvaged a century partnership, Callcut retired after scoring a 57 off 56 balls to claim his 3rd consecutive half century of the season playing for Sunday XI. Mark De Vrij was playing the innings of his life and carried on scoring 82 not out off 94 balls, his first ever half-century that included 12 boundaries, carried his bat through the innings. Redwan Ahmed (34 off 28 balls) showed what he is capable of, hit 5 boundaries and one six, with crisp timing and straight drives. Mohammad Ali came out as Redwan’s wicket fell, took only 9 balls, scored 21 with 2 boundaries and 2 sixes to complete the game in a blink. Newdigate reached 207/1 off 35.5 overs to register an emphatic win by 9 wickets.
There was not much joy for Merton bowlers, except Andrew Counihan (9/1 off 2.5 overs) while David Barber (36 off 8 overs) bowled economically.
Congratulations and well done to Mark on his brilliant 82 not out and we wish for many more from him in the future.
