Cranleigh Clinch Victory in Thrilling Contest Against Newdigate

Sunday XI

Report written by Aiden Jones

Newdigate won the toss and elected to field first, confident of chasing on a good-looking surface. What followed was a hard-fought, see-sawing contest, packed with discipline, key moments, and standout performances — eventually ending in a narrow Cranleigh victory.
Cranleigh Innings
Cranleigh’s innings began cautiously with openers J.Fairweather and P. Petersen faced a disciplined spell from Harry Grimley and Aiden Jones. After an early wicket saw J.Fairweather out for 12, Bradley Cooper tried to rebuild but was caught smartly off the bowling of Jones for 13. Jones bowled an excellent spell, finishing with 2 wickets off his 5 overs, and both bowlers made life difficult for Cranleigh’s top order.
Through the middle overs, Cranleigh found runs hard to come by. By the 15th over, Cranleigh were struggling at 83 for 4, and Newdigate had their noses in front.
However, Cranleigh fought back superbly in the final 20 overs. T Hall (86 not out) and R Denton (36) started to score quickly as the pair re-built Cranleigh innings nicely. Tommy Harland-Fairweather anchored the innings with a composed 23, while T Hall’s well composed innings added vital late runs.
Newdigate’s bowling, so tight early on, began to lose discipline — conceding 36 extras. Cranleigh capitalised and surged past the 200 mark, finishing on a commanding 206 for 6 from their 35 overs.
Newdigates innings
Chasing 207, Newdigate’s reply started cautiously with openers D. Callcut and C. John. Callcut looked in good touch, and made an important 95 by the end of his spell, while John contributed 26 before being dismissed by Lewis who took 2 wickets in a short space of time. The early wickets put Newdigate under pressure, and at 30 for 2, the chase seemed challenging.
However, a vital partnership between Callcut and J. Subbiah, together they built a crucial partnership that kept Newdigate in the game. The pair brought the total closer to 130, and with the final 10 overs left, it seemed Newdigate had a chance.
But the game turned when Callcut was dismissed. From that point, the innings crumbled. Despite a valiant effort, Newdigate’s chase faltered, and the wickets fell quickly. Cranleigh's bowlers, led by T. Hall and Udoini, tightened their grip, and Newdigate could only reach 192, falling 14 runs short of victory. Callcut’s outstanding 95 was the highlight of Newdigate’s effort, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
