Newdigate Secure Convincing Victory Over Wandgas to Continue Winning Run!

Newdigate 1st XI continued their push for league momentum with an impressive 66-run victory over Wandgas at The Brocus, securing a much-needed third win of the season and keeping their hopes alive in a tightly contested league table.

Looking to build on their previous victory and achieve back-to-back wins, Newdigate won the toss and elected to bat first on an excellent batting surface that promised plenty of runs. However, despite a strong start, they were made to work hard for every run by a disciplined Wandgas bowling attack.

Openers David Farrington and Ruky Wickremasinghe provided the perfect platform, putting together a confident opening partnership of 66 runs in just 11 overs. Farrington was the aggressor, playing fluently on his way to a valuable 35, while Wickremasinghe provided excellent support with a composed innings of 32.

After the strong start, Ryan Anderson continued the momentum with a quickfire 27, adding valuable runs and keeping the scoreboard moving. However, Wandgas fought back strongly in the middle overs, led by an outstanding spell from Pravin Dhetchinamoorthy, who produced a superb performance with the ball, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 wickets for just 20 runs. He was well supported by Jenagan Jay, who claimed 3 for 46, as the pair applied pressure and halted Newdigate’s middle-order progress.

With wickets falling regularly, Newdigate needed a late push to reach a competitive total. Steven Kehl played an important innings of 33, while Jack Bowley remained unbeaten on 21 to help guide the home side to 218 all out from 43 overs.

Defending what looked a slightly below-par total, Newdigate’s bowlers responded superbly. Wandgas’ openers came out with attacking intent, looking to take advantage of the good batting conditions, but were unable to break through against the controlled and accurate bowling of Allan Cooper and Daniel Harrington. Both bowlers struck early, removing the opening pair and giving Newdigate the perfect start.

The home side’s fielding was also a major improvement from previous weeks, with Steve Kehl once again showcasing his outstanding ability in the field, taking an excellent running catch in the deep.

Wandgas captain Paul Howgate led from the front with a well-crafted 43, attempting to keep his side in the contest. However, with wickets falling around him, the chase became increasingly difficult. Only JJ (29) and Ransi (21) offered further resistance, but once they departed, the result was all but confirmed.

Newdigate’s bowling attack displayed excellent discipline throughout the innings, with all five bowlers contributing and claiming two wickets each. Their consistent pressure proved too much for Wandgas, who were eventually bowled out for 152 in 38 overs.

The victory moves Newdigate up the league table and maintains their climb in what remains a highly competitive season. With confidence growing and the heatwave continuing, the team will look to carry this winning form into their next fixture against Old Whitgiftians CC this Saturday.

A strong all-round team performance, highlighted by disciplined bowling, improved fielding, and valuable contributions with the bat, gives Newdigate plenty of reasons to believe they can continue their rise in the weeks ahead.
