Newdigate CC endured another difficult afternoon as they slipped to a 109-run defeat against Ashtead CC 3rd XI at home, leaving them eighth in the league table ahead of a daunting trip to leaders Merstham next weekend.
After winning the toss, Ashtead elected to bat first and made the most of favourable conditions, posting a competitive 247 all out from their allotted 45 overs.
Ashtead's innings was built around a fluent 59 from Marcus Caprano-Wint, who struck the ball cleanly throughout his 55-ball stay at the crease. Patrick Murray added further substance with a well-constructed half-century, while a late acceleration from Dev Vaidya (36) and Dheer Ray (27) ensured the visitors finished strongly.
Although the total proved challenging, Newdigate had opportunities to keep Ashtead in check. Joe Haynes bowled with excellent control and regularly beat the bat, creating numerous chances despite finishing wicketless. Allan Cooper produced an important spell through the middle overs, claiming three wickets and helping to stem the flow of runs. George Daniels also finished with three key scalps as Ashtead were eventually dismissed in the final over of their innings.
The home side will feel they left runs in the field, however, with several dropped catches and some untidy ground fielding allowing Ashtead to build partnerships at crucial moments. One notable exception was Steve Kehl, who produced an outstanding fielding display. Kehl held four catches and saved numerous runs with his athletic work in the field, providing one of Newdigate's brightest performances of the day.
Chasing 248 for victory, Newdigate's reply never gathered momentum. Early wickets once again exposed the middle order, and with the scoreboard reading 46 for 4 in the 15th over, the hosts were immediately on the back foot.
Despite efforts from Steve Kehl and Syed Ahmed, who scored 31 and 33 respectively, Newdigate struggled to build the partnerships required to challenge the target. Ashtead's bowlers maintained pressure throughout, sharing the wickets around and demonstrating impressive discipline in all aspects of their game.
With regular breakthroughs preventing any meaningful recovery, Newdigate were eventually bowled out for 138 in 38.4 overs, well short of the visitors' total.
The defeat continues a frustrating run for Newdigate, who know improvements are needed with both bat and in the field if they are to climb the table. Attention now turns to next week's fixture against league leaders Merstham, where the side will be looking for a significant response and a return to winning ways.
