Newdigate Cricket Club secured a richly deserved promotion to Division 5 in emphatic style after an outstanding bowling display paved the way for an eight-wicket victory over Old Whitgiftians CC 2nd XI.

Having won the toss and elected to field, Newdigate made the perfect start, ripping through the Old Whitgiftians top order to leave the hosts reeling at 9-5.

Joseph Haynes and Allan Cooper led the early assault, regularly finding breakthroughs and putting Newdigate firmly in control. Daniel Harrington and George Daniels then provided excellent support as the pressure continued to mount.

Despite the early collapse, Reece Etwaroo dug in impressively for the visitors, producing a determined innings of 52 from 89 balls, including four boundaries. Ryan Patel offered further resistance with 16, but wickets continued to fall around them and Old Whitgiftians were eventually dismissed for 101 in 36.2 overs.

Newdigate's bowling attack shared the spoils, with Haynes the pick of the attack with an excellent 3-29 from his nine overs. Cooper returned outstanding figures of 2-16, while Harrington claimed 2-20 and Daniels also took two wickets. Thomas Clark completed the innings by taking the final wicket without conceding a run.

With only 102 required for victory, Newdigate wasted little time in completing the job.

There was a brief wobble when Ruky Wickremasinghe was run out for four, followed by the dismissal of David Farrington for 16, but Kian Bradley and skipper Ryan Anderson quickly took control.

Bradley, playing his final innings for the club, produced a fittingly composed finish to his excellent season, remaining unbeaten on 39 from just 44 balls. His innings included eight boundaries and ensured Newdigate never looked seriously troubled in the chase.

At the other end, Anderson provided the fireworks.

The Newdigate captain smashed an unbeaten 28 from just 11 deliveries, clearing the ropes once and finding the boundary five times in a devastating late assault. Anderson's latest contribution took his league tally to an impressive 613 runs for the season, earning him the top batting honours in the league and providing the perfect finishing touch to a remarkable campaign.

The pair took Newdigate to 104-2 in just 17 overs, completing a comprehensive eight-wicket victory.

But the afternoon was not quite over.

With their own match won, Newdigate's players remained glued to their screens, anxiously following the remaining balls of the Wallington innings. The result elsewhere was crucial to their promotion hopes — and when Wallington failed to win, the celebrations could finally begin.

Newdigate had secured promotion to Division 5.

The achievement represents a remarkable turnaround for a side that, earlier in the season, had been staring down the barrel of relegation. But an extraordinary run of 10 victories in their final 12 matches transformed their season and ultimately carried them to promotion. From relegation worries to promotion celebrations, Newdigate's campaign has been a superb example of determination, resilience, and belief.

The final victory over Old Whitgiftians was a fitting reflection of that turnaround: disciplined bowling, controlled batting and a team working together to get the job done.

With promotion now secured, Newdigate CC can look ahead to Division 5 next season with plenty of optimism.
