Newdigate 1st XI makes it three from three to finish the first half of the season on a high

Newdigate 1st XI continued their excellent run of form with a third consecutive victory, defeating Old Whitgiftians by 62 runs to end the first half of the season on a high and move into joint fourth place in the league.

Asked to bat first, Newdigate suffered an early setback as they slipped to 36 for 3. David Farrington and Danny Harrington then steadied the innings with an excellent partnership of 77, rebuilding after the early losses.

Farrington continued his good form, playing a number of sumptuous drives and elegant flicks before falling agonisingly short of a half-century. Dismissed for 49, he provided the perfect platform for the middle order.

Harrington initially accumulated patiently before accelerating once Steve Kehl arrived at the crease. The pair took the attack to the bowlers, adding a match-winning 113 runs for the fifth wicket. Kehl was particularly aggressive, smashing an excellent half-century from just 37 deliveries to wrestle the momentum firmly back in Newdigate's favour.

Meanwhile, Harrington looked set to register his maiden century for the club before eventually falling for a superb 92 from 100 balls. His innings featured 12 boundaries and two towering sixes and proved to be the cornerstone of the visitors' total.

Useful contributions from the lower order ensured Newdigate closed on an imposing 267 for 9 from their allotted 45 overs, a total that looked highly competitive on a good batting surface with a lightning-fast outfield.

Atif Shah was the standout bowler for Old Whitgiftians, returning impressive figures of 4 for 22 from his nine overs.

In reply, Old Whitgiftians made an explosive start as skipper Ramamurthy raced to a quickfire 31, putting the Newdigate attack under early pressure. However, Jon Bell and Allan Cooper soon wrestled back control. The pair shared five quick wickets to leave the home side reeling at 60 for 5, with Bell producing a superb spell of nine overs unchanged that cost just 24 runs and created the pressure Newdigate needed.

Although the middle order battled hard, the required run rate continued to climb, making the chase increasingly difficult. Kieran Patel led the resistance with a well-crafted 57 before he was dismissed by spinner Ruky Wickremasinghe. Patel received some support from the lower order, but despite the tail wagging, Old Whitgiftians were unable to mount a serious challenge.

Cooper and the returning Andy Kehl claimed two wickets apiece as Newdigate wrapped up the innings, dismissing the hosts for 205 in the 44th over to complete a deserved 62-run victory.

The win makes it three on the bounce for Newdigate and lifts them into joint fourth place in the league, leaving the side well placed to mount a strong challenge during the second half of the season.
