Newdigate 1st XI bounced back to winning form with an impressive seven-wicket victory over Dorking 2nd XI, chasing down a target of 142 with plenty to spare. The visitors won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that quickly paid dividends as Newdigate’s bowlers applied pressure from the opening over and never allowed Dorking to fully settle.
Dorking were restricted to 141 all out from 41.3 overs, with Newdigate’s attack delivering a disciplined and controlled performance throughout the innings.
Opening bowlers Joy Haynes and Allan Cooper set the tone from the very start, building pressure through accurate bowling and tight lines. Haynes made an immediate impact, claiming a wicket in his first over and putting the Dorking batters under early pressure. His relentless accuracy, combined with a nagging line and length, kept the scoring rate down and forced mistakes from the opposition.
Despite the strong start from Newdigate, Dorking found some stability through a valuable partnership between Andy Homewood and Graham Dymond. The pair rebuilt the innings with a composed stand, adding crucial runs after the early setbacks. Homewood contributed a well-made 40, while Dymond top-scored with 48, helping Dorking recover and post a competitive total.
However, Newdigate continued to apply pressure in the middle overs. Ben Crook delivered an outstanding spell, bowling nine excellent overs for just 18 runs and taking two important wickets to prevent Dorking from accelerating late in the innings. His disciplined bowling kept the batters tied down and ensured Newdigate maintained control.
Haynes then returned to finish what he had started, wrapping up the innings in style. Continuing his excellent spell, he claimed a superb five-wicket haul, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 17 and ensuring Dorking were bowled out before they could push towards a bigger total.
Chasing 142 for victory, Newdigate began cautiously, respecting the conditions while keeping the scoreboard moving. The opening partnership provided a platform before David Farrington played another useful innings, making 31 before being dismissed after a promising start.
Tom Gross then added 20 valuable runs to and supported Ryan Anderson, who produced the match-winning performance. Anderson took the game away from Dorking with a brilliant attacking innings, smashing 66 runs from just 37 balls. His aggressive stroke play changed the momentum of the chase and ensured there was no late pressure on Newdigate.
With Anderson leading the charge, Newdigate reached 145 for 3 in just 29.3 overs to complete a comfortable seven-wicket win.
The victory marks a welcome return to winning ways for Newdigate after a difficult run of results. The team will be looking to build on this performance and carry the momentum forward as they aim to climb the league table. With results remaining unpredictable across the division, the competition remains open, and Newdigate’s strong all-round display will give them confidence heading into the next fixtures.
