Bill Turner Obituary

James Penfold22 Aug - 16:35

Farewell to a true gentleman of the game, both on and off the field

It is with great sorrow that we note the passing of Bill Turner, a stalwart of the Newdigate cricket family, who lost his brave and extended battle with cancer in July 2025.

Bill played over 300 games for the club between 1999 and 2018, and continued his cricketing life with the Surrey Seniors 60+ and 70+ 1st XI’s.

Bill was the 1st Team wicket-keeper for a decade until 2009, then took over as Saturday 2nd XI skipper from 2010 to 2013.

With easily the slickest glove work in the club’s history, he surprised both opening bowlers and batsman in equal measure, with his ability to stand up to their quickest deliveries, whilst forcing batsman back to their crease, for fear that any play & miss would see them stumped and back in the pavilion.

Having retired from regular Saturday cricket in 2018, he continued his involvement with the club through his successful running of the 100 Club, which has been fun and profitable exploit for many years.

Over and above being a fine cricketer, Bill was an absolute gentleman, one of the very best. Our condolences go to his wife Jan and children Abbie and James for their great loss.

Bill’s funeral is at Randall's Road Crematorium, Leatherhead, KT22 0AG at 12.30pm on the 1st September.

The wake will be at the cricket club after the funeral. If you wish to attend, please advise Jan Turner (please contact me for her contact details) so that she can make the necessary plans.
