Before I even start the match coverage, I would like to praise our squad of wonderful tea ladies, Jo, Sam and Moon. Needless to say, a tasty and satisfying tea lies at the core of the Sunday Cricket. The ladies are not only keeping up with this, but also trying to outbid themselves in every occasion – a fantastic position for the Sunday players and my Thanks to the ladies.
New Nets opening Ceremony, BBQ, Sun, a friendly Cricket Match and over a hundred people’s presence featured the Father’s day at Newdigate Cricket Club on Sunday 19th June 2022.
An intra-club match was held on the day between Newdigate Sunday 1st XI and 2nd XI, with families featuring the Carringtons, Balls, Islams, Dearsleys, Harpers, Glens, beside the regular players. Daddy Captain Andy Glen led Sunday 1st XI while Daddy Captain Simon Carrington herded Sunday 2nd XI.
A 30 overs match was decided allowing sufficient tea and hydration break. The toss was won by Captain Glen who invited Captain Carrington to bat. The match started at 1:15 pm.
Carrington family gave the 2nd XI a good start; Over-excited Daddy Carrington forgot to put-on the essential body armour when batting but he realised the error soon and mistake was corrected followed by his dismissal on 13. However, the run-scoring momentum was carried throughout the 2s innings. Hussain Abdul Munaff (51), Redwan Ahmed (58 not out) and Jagadeesh Subbiah (54 not out) set a very challenging total of 200 runs after 30 overs. Sunday 2nd XI lost only 4 wickets in the process. Wickets were shared among the 1st XI bowlers and they bowled generously, except Ben Crook (4 overs, 9 runs) and Sebastian Dearsley (4 overs, 13 runs).
The Harpers were equal to the task, for Sunday 1st XI, who started aggressively. Thomas Harper (62 off 44 balls) made the backbone of the innings while Elliot Spiers (27), Monjur Elahi (22) and Andy Glen (17) built around. However, 2nd XI bowlers bowled well and kept taking wickets in regular intervals. 1st XI got all out at the end on 29.4 overs scoring 186 runs. 2nd XI bowlers shared the wickets among them, while Charlie Stimpson stood out with 2 wickets.
Sunday 2nd XI registered a good win by 14 runs, it was a close match at the end, it was a great day weather-wise and even the rain held off till the match was finished.
