Putney CC Sunday 2nd XI is a regular fixture for Newdigate CC over past few years and they visited us on the 12th June 2022 to play a 40 overs Friendly at Newdigate Cricket Ground.
On this bright-sunny- day, the toss was won by the Home Captain who decided to bat first on a dry tack.
Runs started to flow right from the start, indicating a flat pitch. Hussain (27) and Mike Duthie (17) gave the host a solid start. Sean Roast enjoyed a long batting session taking advantage of the promotion at number 3 to score the highest score of 73 for Newdigate. He was ably supported by Jack Bowley with his 37. Contributions from Jack Butler (19), Monjur Elahi (17) and Jagadeesh Subbiah 14 ensured a competitive score of 246/6 off 40 overs.
Maintaining the consistency in bowling was key for defending 246 on a flat wicket. Young Charlie Stimpson and Marcus Glen started well with the ball, but struggled at times which were used well by the Putney openers. Bowling change created an opportunity, thanks to Tommy Stimpson however Mark Smith went on to score 114 and finally fell trying to hit big off Monjur Elahi’s bowling. The other Putney opener, Mark Bickford, scored a solid 85 who fell to Jagadeesh’s off-spin. Manish Naik (43) remained not out to steer his side to comfortable victory by 8 wickets. Putney CC Sunday 2nd XI scored 247/2 off 36.2 overs.

Newdigate CC TVNewdigate batters were able to take a lot of positives out of the match, the balls were hit cleanly, a big score was set – this has been a great confidence builder. The young bowlers, Stimpsons and Glen, were given an opportunity to bowl, ahead of the other bowlers, against accomplished batsmen and they learnt to endure the long spells, identify areas where they can improve. Overall, the day saw both teams scoring almost 500 runs, a run-fest where the visitors came out victorious.
